This substantial Victorian townhouse in Hackney has been carefully reworked into a contemporary family home, balancing intervention with restraint. The plan opens and reconfigures around a double-height rear extension, drawing light deep into the interior through a series of considered light wells positioned above a wide kitchen and dining space that connects directly to the garden.
A continuous polished concrete floor runs throughout, reflecting daylight and establishing a calm, neutral ground plane. Against this, a bespoke kitchen is introduced with precision. At its centre, a natural brass island anchors the space—its material left to patinate over time, bringing warmth and depth through use rather than ornament.
Developed during my time at Daytrip Studio, where I contributed to the design and delivery of the scheme.
